recorded in kobe, kyoto, tokyo, september 2015 photos by jim orourke. layout by shunichiro okada despite decades of activity and having crossed paths in various collaborations editions mego is honoured to release the first ever duo recording from two of the most highly regarded citizens of planet experimental electronic. individually, jim orourke and christian fennesz have been responsible for numerous legendary works which merge the traditional avant-garde with contemporary sensibilities. on its hard for me to say im sorry these giants of experimental electronic practice come together for an immensely powerful sonic experience. the signature of both o rourke and fennesz cohabit this new release with o rourkes gurgling harmonies swimming amongst the shimmering frequencies and strummed melodies produced by fennesz. two side long tracks situate themselves as a warm electronic adventure. simultaneously radical and comforting these works shift from gentle sonorities to fully distorted explosions all of which reside within a template of tension between musical and non-music matter. timeless in execution and presentation its hard for me to say im sorry is a deeply rewarding sonic experience from two of the most romantic gentlemen active in experimental music today.

der titel ist programmatisch. 1976 im new yorker hunter college aufgenommen, steht der große blues-sänger und gitarrist john lee hooker alleine auf der bühne. nur auf sich selbst konzentriert, spielt er den blues in seiner reinsten form. dieses album wird nun erstmals auf vinyl veröffentlicht (downloadcode inklusive). dies ist teil 2 der aufnahme seines legendären konzertes in new york, was ursprünglich auf dem label tomato veröffentlicht wurde. wie ein jazz-musiker, liebt john lee hooker es zu improvisieren. so sind die hier vorliegenden versionen einiger seiner größten hits wie “boogie chillen” und “hobo blues” einmalig - im doppelten sinne dieses begriffes. der im jahr 2001 verstorbene john lee hooker gilt als legende seines fachs. er spielte in dem film “blues brothers” mit und ist unter anderem mit einem stern auf dem hollywood walk of fame, der aufnahme in die blues hall of fame und die aufnahme in die rock and roll hall of fame geehrt worden.

for their tenth release, voodoo down has again chosen to debut a new act to add to their label roster. andy harper and nic ford have been making music together for over a decade but began releasing in earnest under the name maddermodes in 2014 on their own label, shift coordinate points. they have since put out records on the labels millions of moments and night drive music. their handful of releases have already drawn support from top names like move d and nick höppner, and its clear that the duos sound is only getting more refined with each successive record. the ep entitled emprical evidence is a wholly cinematic piece of work, spread across four tracks that unravel slowly, unified by a theme of pumping syncopated rhythms under sprawling pad and string progressions. its easy to get lost in the thick arrangements, and the inventive use of samples and melodic elements invite repeat listening. equally suitable for early morning hours, ultra-deep techno sets, or quiet home listening sessions.

about a year ago nico stojan and acid pauli met at the studio to record some music. while doing so they discovered their common love for sample based production. so they were basically digging into old vinyls and eventually these three tracks came along. nothing more to say, but enjoy. call of the valley is the first release on the new label ouie: there has been a shift in this tiny piece of massive world and, like all other shifts, they are documented by those who were there. ouie is the label to do just that, created by the people who were there, making those shifts.

its not often you hear a techno record produced by a total of five people. when it happens, it’s usually to mark a passage and make a statement. sometimes it is a matter of celebrating a rita of passage, a shift into maturity and the embodiment of a new skin. this is what repitch is doing with the fourth and final installment in their “features” series, reuniting all the crew for the the final blast of what’s been a long and massive barrage of heavy techno. this is the collaboration to end them all: repitch founders ascion, d. carbone and shapenoise have shared the studio with longtime allies and. together, they explore a common ground made of pounding metallic percussions, gutwrenching bass and thick, furious grooves, with each producer bringing his own peculiar contributions to the table. this last installment marks the end of a process that accompanied repitch throughout its whole existence, thus enhancing the beginning of a new chapter in the label’s creative output.

the prolific lord of the isles (aka scotlands neil mcdonald) has had a string of stunning 12 inches over the past few years on labels such as permanent vacation, unthank, shevchenko, mule and of course his four track > year of the city ep< on phonica, which was widely acclaimed upon its release in 2012. this time loti presents two long-form tracks, each a mini-masterpiece in itself. the 10 minute plus >greane< bursts into life after an intro of kicks and white noise hi-hats. it continues to slowly build, with pitch-bent synth lines and a pulsing bass-line making way for a melacholic shift in mood. truly original stuff! on the flip, a swirl of synthetic strings introduces ‘gigha’, in a manner that brings to mind rhythm is rhythm’s legendary ‘kao-tic harmony’, before the drums and infectious acid-line join in. over the 8 minutes they continue to interweave and play off each other to dazzling effect. artwork by jack featherstone, the designer of a number of sleeves for border community (including the highly praised campaign behind james holden’s ‘the inheritors’, its singles and live visuals), electric minds, warm and of course, phonica.
